Former Stellenbosch FC defender Olwethu Makhanya has scored his ever goal for Philadelphia Union in the Major League Soccer.
Makhanya, 21, moved from Stellies to Philadelphia in 2023 and had to endure a first season with the club’s reserves, helping them to win the MLS NEXT Pro Eastern Conference.

But his fortunes changes with the arrival of new head coach Bradley Carnell, who has made Makhanya a permanent feature in his starting XI.
On Wednesday night, Makhanya scored his first goal for the club with a powerful header, which was already Philadelphia’s 15th goal from a set-piece.
Makhanya scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over CF Montreal which saw his side remain at the top of the MLS standings with 46 points from 23 games.
