South African coach Bradley Carnell was involved in a ten-goal thriller in the MLS against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, while Steve Barker and Fadlu Davids saw their respective teams stay at the top of their leagues.
Carnell’s Philadelphia Union suffered a 6-4 defeat in a hard-fought MLS encounter early on Monday morning, with Messi registering two assists while Luis Suarez netted a brace for Miami.
Philadelphia’s South African defender Olwethu Makhanya, who was recently named in the Bafana Bafana preliminary World Cup squad, missed the match due to suspension after accumulating five yellow cards.
Elsewhere in the USA, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Puso Dithejane featured for 62 and 17 minutes, respectively, as Chicago Fire secured a 2-1 triumph over Toronto FC.
Meanwhile, in Morocco, Fadlu Davids’ Raja Casablanca picked up a slender 1-0 victory over Dcheira on Sunday afternoon to remain at the summit of the standings with 42 points from 21 matches. However, they risk losing top spot if rivals FAR Rabat, who have 40 points and a game in hand, win their match.
In Tanzania, Steve Barker’s Simba SC extended their unbeaten run to 24 matches, while stretching their winning streak in the league to five games. Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema played the full 90 minutes, while defender Rushine De Reuck was not in the matchday squad. Simba sit at the top of the table with 58 points from 25 matches.
In Cyprus, Mihlali Mayambela made his second consecutive start, playing 85 minutes in Omonia’s commanding 5-2 victory over Apollon.
Over in Austria, Yusuf Maart put in a full 90-minute shift as SV Ried picked up their second consecutive victory with a 2-1 win over SK Rapid.
And in England, Bafana striker Lyle Foster missed his second successive match as relegated Burnley concluded their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Wolves.
