Banyana Captain Impresses On SA Return

TS Galaxy Queens head coach Sizwe Sibiya was impressed with Banyana Banyana captain Refiloe Jane after her debut for the Rockets, as they opened their 2025 Hollywoodbets Super League account.

Jane was announced as one of the eight new signings for the new season by Galaxy on Friday and started in the side’s 2-0 win over First Touch Academy in Polokwane on Saturday.

The 32-year-old provided the assist to their first goal by Promise Selana in her first competitive match in almost a year.

Sibiya credited his technical team for making sure that the midfielder was able to last 90 minutes on the field.

“The first question from me to her is ‘can you go the distance?’” Sibiya told iDiski Times after the game.

“That’s very important. Can you go the distance? I think the last time she played a competitive match was around May, June [2024], somewhere there, it’s a long time ago.

“I’ve got an incredible technical team. They prepared my team so well that anyone can play for 90 minutes. I’m happy with it but I’m happy with her presence I mean you saw the first goal. You cannot take away that class but I’m happy.

“She came into a team that believes firmly in what they want to achieve and fortunately, our beliefs and her beliefs they align. It’s a blessing from God.

“I mean what more can a coach ask for if someone is coming from wherever, top class, technically gifted. I mean, all those players that we signed are top, top, top class.”

Jane wasn’t the only big name announced by the Mpumalanga based outfit with Leandra Smeda being other. But Smeda, who is capped 100 times for South Africa, wasn’t in the match-day squad, with Sibiya revealing that her registration card wasn’t ready.

“Unfortunately, her card wasn’t ready,” added the former Black Leopards midfielder.

“But, you know, she would have either sat on the bench or started either or. it’s just that thing that the card wasn’t ready.”
