Downs Ladies Widen Gap At Top As UWC Register Vital Win

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies opened a six-point gap at the top of the Hollywoodbets Super League following their 2-0 win over newcomers Lindelani Ladies at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday.

Botswana international Refilwe Tholakele opened the scoring on the 45th minute mark before Karabo Dhlamini rounded off the winner 13 minutes from time, as the Queens of the Continent moved to 44 points in 17 matches.

The battle for second place saw the University of Western Cape (UWC) leapfrog University of Johannesburg (UJ) with a narrow 1-0 win in the Mother City. UWC captain Amogelang Motau scored the only goal of the match. They now sit on the same number of points as UWC (38) though they’ve played a game less.

Elsewhere, JVW Football Club continued their winning form, defeating Richmond United 2-1 in Soweto. Gabriela Salgado and veteran striker Nompumelelo Nyandeni were on the score sheet, as the Blue Diamonds stayed in fourth position with 30 points in 16 outings while United dropped to eighth place with 25 points from 17 games.

Thunderbirds Ladies registered only their third point of the campaign after holding First Touch Academy (FTA) to a goalless draw in Limpopo. The side from Butterworth remain rooted at the bottom of the table with three points in 17 matches, while FTA are in ninth with 21 points from the same number of games.
