Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have broken into the 70-point mark after drubbing First Touch Academy 5-0 in the Hollywoodbets Super League at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Heritage Day.
Boitumelo Rabale scored a first-half brace to take her goal tally to 14, while Nthabiseng Majiya also grabbed a brace in the second half to get to 13 goals, with the fifth goal coming from Asanda Hadebe to help Sundowns get to 71 points in 26 matches.
The win sees Jerry Tshabalala’s charges remaining at the summit of the log, while it also means they could possibly seal the defence of their title in the next two matches if the results of their nearest competitor University of Western Cape (UWC) also favours them.
The African champions have 12 points to play for until the end of the season, while the Blues have 24 to play for, now with the news that they will replay the game against TS Galaxy Queens, which was initially deemed a walker over in favour of the Cape side after the Rockets did not make it on time for kick-off.
Tshabalala was modest to iDiski Times after the empathic victory and about the possibilities of wrapping up the campaign earlier saying his team is concentrating on their short term targets.
“For us it’s not yet about looking at the title,” the coach told iDiski Times.
“We just want to take it one day at a time. We are going away this Saturday to Thunderbirds, then we get a break then we’ve got a very tough one a Tshwane derby against the University of Pretoria.
“I think the target was for us to win the five games in the month of September so we are one game from our target. Then from there we can start saying let’s go and see in terms of finishing strong maybe with two games left to spare. So we are still working on that.”
Meanwhile at the bottom it is also a mater time before Thunderbirds Ladies are officially relegated to the SASOL league after being humbled 6-0 defeat by UWC in the mother city.
This is their 23rd loss of the season and they have three points all from drawn games after 26 matches. They can only play for 12 points with their nearest rival having 13 points from the same number of games.
