Sapula Downplays Having One Hand On HLWB Super League Title

Despite being just a point away from their sixth successive Hollywoodbets Super League title, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies head coach Godfrey Sapula says it would be out of character to play for a draw in midweek.

This is after his side’s narrow 1-0 win over Copperbelt Ladies in the league over the weekend where they reached 71 points in 27 matches. That’s five points from their nearest rivals JVW FC who defeated City Lads 2-0 and have one game left to play. Bonolo Mokoma and Julia Goncalves were on target to see the Blue Diamonds move to second spot with 66 points.

A draw between Sundowns and City Lads on Wednesday would see the former African champions get to 72 points with two games left to play meaning that even if JVW win their last match it would not be enough to catch up with Banyana Ba style. A win would definitely be a bonus as they would secure the title with two games left to spare.

Sapula is careful to not count chickens before eggs hatch urging his charges to stick to their plan and objective of winning all their games.

“For us, we have our own targets,” said Sapula on SABC TV after the win over the Limpopo side.

“We play to win all the games. For us, that’s the truth. It’s not that we are going for a draw. We have our own targets, you know, we are playing to win every football match. We don’t want to put ourselves in a situation where we do the math and we start calculating this and that.

“We want to go and win a football match. Actually, we had set the target, what we want to achieve from the 30 games, and we want to complete that. So, we are not going into this match with that attitude.”

Other results in the HLWB SL this past weekend saw Ezemvelo suffer a crushing 4-0 home defeat to the University of Western Cape.
