The future of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele hangs in the balance after he was left behind when the team departed for their pre-season camp in Spain.

Amakhosi flew out on Thursday to begin preparations for the 2026/27 season, with several friendly matches scheduled under the guidance of assistant coach Fernando Da Cruz.

The Soweto giants will play three friendlies in Spain between 10 and 19 July before returning to South Africa to continue their preparations.

Chiefs are set to face Rangers FC on 12 July, Al Kholood on 15 July and Elche CF on 18 July.

Cele was not included in the travelling squad, with the midfielder appearing increasingly likely to leave the club ahead of the new campaign.

According to iDiski Times sources, the 29-year-old and his representatives are exploring potential options for his next move.

Cele joined Chiefs in January 2025 after the club had pursued his signature for an extended period. He arrived on a free transfer following his departure from Russian side Fakel Voronezh.

He made an impressive impact during the second half of the 2024/25 season, helping the Soweto giants lift the Nedbank Cup and end their 10-year wait for silverware.

However, his progress last season was disrupted by injuries, which affected his momentum and limited his influence. Across his time at Chiefs, Cele has made 36 appearances in all competitions.
