Cape Town City, who are currently involved in the promotional playoffs, parted ways with two of their foreigners ahead of the mini-tournament.
City began their campaign in the playoffs with a goalless draw against Orbit College at the DHL Stadium on Saturday, but did so without Darwin Gonzalez and Amadou Soukhouna, who have seemingly both exited the club ahead of their contracts expiring at the end of the month, joining Kamohelo Mokotjo and Edson Sithole at the exit door.
While Soukouna only joined the club at the start of the season, this was Gonzalez’s fourth season in Cape Town.
Neither were involved in City’s training in recent weeks as they prepared for the playoofs.
This was confirmed by a source at the club, who also told iDiski Times that Spanish goalkeeper coach, Miguel Iglesias, had also departed.
iDiski Times asked City’s interim coach Diogo Peral about the exits, but Peral felt their absence was less felt than those who suspended for the game.
“Those guys listen, it becomes difficult now, it becomes difficult to plan for next season, not knowing exactly where you’re going to be,” Peral said.
“But more than the guys leaving, [we missed] the guys that were suspended. So we had to change the entire back line.
“We play a different formation, and that’s more due to the guys that got suspended. We’ve got the left-back is gone, we’ve got Lorenzo suspended for today’s game. We’ve got the holding midfielder (out), so that changes your entire defence.
“So still at home, you want to do better than this. You want to get three points.”
City will play their second round-robin game against Casric Stars on Wednesday at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium.
