Former Kaizer Chiefs academy coach Farouk Khan has offered advice to his former side for the transfer window, saying they need to reconnect with what previously made them great in terms of player recruitment.
Amakhosi have announced six signings in this current window so far, as they look to be competitive in the league next season, having finished outside the top 8 in the last two successive campaigns.
The signings include three relatively unknown players who played in lower leagues in Europe in Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva and Nkanyiso Shinga, two former Orlando Pirates players who were released by their former side in Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako and Siphesihle Ndlovu from SuperSport United.
Khan told iDiski Times senior writer Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 212 of the newspaper that Chiefs need to go back to their roots and create their own blueprint.
“Stop rebuilding from scratch every season,” Khan told iDiski Times.
“Create a blueprint. Develop from within. Make sure the technical, admin, and management teams are aligned.
“In the past, you could look at a player and say, ‘That’s a Chiefs player.’ Today, that’s no longer true. It’s not just about winning one trophy. It’s about sustained excellence.”
Khan said he is not writing off the new players and understands the new technologies involved in player recruitment but he believes that things can be done better.
“You can’t just sign players because they’re free agents, or they have potential,” added Khan.
“You need someone doing proper due diligence – not just watching a few clips but really understanding a player’s background, personality and how they respond to pressure.”
