Middendorp On New Signings – Sundowns Would Not Give Me Williams…

Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp has opened up on the club’s January plans, saying they need to find available players who would immediately improve their starting XI.

With the January transfer window now open, Spurs desperately need players who can change things in the second half of the season for them.

Middendorp said they would go and look at players but made sure that it must be players who will have to come in and hit the floor running immediately.

This is due to Spurs lying at the bottom of the DStv Premiership table with four points after 16 matches, having won just one game thus far.

“Can you answer the question?” replied Middendorp after he was asked if they have identified the areas they want to reinforce this month.

“You are rock bottom, and if you are on four points, what are you talking about? It means at this moment you must look in every department – you must look goalkeeper, defence, midfield, striker position, you can look all around,” he elaborates.

“The question is – it is possible to find players who are going to help us. It’s not to fill quantity into it and work with players we have and make them better and try to find some players where we can get them into the right position, formation, systems, whoever knows what is the difference between formation and system, only the expert like you because it was all mixed up.

“We must look, and it doesn’t mean they will be [players coming in]. Players who are coming in must be in the first 11 players. It is not a question of the budget; it is a question of where you find them.

“If I go to Sundowns and I said, ‘I want Ronwen Williams’, they will laugh at me and say ‘hahaha, next time, not now’. We must be convinced about it and that is what we have done for weeks to keep an eye open, to have a lot of discussions, and try to find options and possibilities.

“But I can’t tell you what is possible now. It is not the question of budget; it is a question of finding the right one to make sure they help at the end.”

Spurs have recently reinforced their defending department by signing Rafiq de Goede, who was previously at Maritzburg United, Middendorp’s former club, on a free transfer.

The Urban Warriors have lost six out of their last seven games, and will return to action on 14 February when they will face Royal AM in what almost looks like a must-win already.
