Official: Sundowns Winger Completes Move To Europe

Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thapelo Maseko has joined Cypriot side AEL Limassol on loan, as previously reported by iDisk Times.

The loan move until the end of the season was confirmed by the Cypriot side, where he will link up with South African compatriot Luther Singh.

At the beginning of the current campaign, Cyprus giants Aris Limassol were interested in the winger but couldn’t agree on a club-to-club and the move collapsed.

Since then, Maseko played just over 100 minutes in Sundowns’ senior side. He played a few games in the reserve side to keep himself fit and this move could help the 22-year-old in fighting for his place in the Bafana Bafana team after missing the 2025 AFCON.

On Tuesday, Limassol confirmed the loan deal.

“Limassol Athletic Association announces the reach of an agreement with South African champions league Mamelodi Sundowns FC for the loan of footballer Thapelo Maseko, until the end of the current football season,” the club stated.

“Thapelo Maseko is 22 years old and plays in all positions in midfield. His professional career started with the SuperSport United team with which he recorded 34 appearances. In 2023 he signed up for the champions Mamelodi Sundowns FC, recording to date 45 appearances in domestic and international events such as the African Football League & Cup and the CAF Champions League. In addition, he is international with the South African national team having so far recorded 7 appearances.

“We welcome the footballer to the big family of AEL and wish him every success with the blue and yellow jersey.”

There are already two South African players playing is the Cyprus League. Mihlali Mayambela turns out for Aris Limassol and Singh playing for AEL.
