Polokwane Release 10, Give Makola Update

Polokwane City Chief Operations Officer (COO) Tincy Tema has confirmed that the club has offloaded about 10 players, but veterans Mpho Makola and Joseph Mhlongo will be kept ahead of the upcoming DStv Premiership season.

City gained automatic promotion to the premier division in May after overtaking Casric Stars and Cape Town Spurs on the final day and finishing top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship with 57 points.

Tema says the club has already released several players and and more will follow in the coming days, however, Makola and Mhlongo will stay.

“There is quite a few players that we have released [and] the reason was to freshen up the squad and also to create space for the new players that will be coming. For now it is roughly about 10 or 11 but going forward there may be some other casualties,” Tema told iDiski Times.

“We are going to keep them because of their experience. Remember the players that we had last season, most of them they were still young and new in the professional set-up. Hence we brought in the likes of Makola to mentor them. We are happy with what they did and we are very grateful to them.”

In addition, Tema also confirmed that the technical team around Duncan Lechesa will stay, while they are looking to add a new fitness coach.

“Not only Duncan but also coach Phuti [Moafe], most people know him because he has been there when Duncan was absent due to ill health, we are definitely keeping them,” he added.

“For us they are good coaches, they did some sterling work for us. The technical team stays the same except for the fitness trainer, where we feel that we have to have somebody who has more experience and can help the team.

“When we sat down with the coaches and even from our own assessment we realised that we need someone, who can add more value in terms of fitness.”

Meanwhile, the Premier Soccer League will officially crown City as the winners of the first Motsepe Foundation Championship and receive their medals and trophy during a ceremony on Wednesday evening.
