Sundowns’ Second Departure Confirmed

Mamelodi Sundowns have parted ways with Kenyan defender Brian Mandela Onyango after four seasons at the club.

Onyango joined Sundowns as a free agent after leaving Maritzburg United following three seasons with the club in July 2019.

The 29-year-old made over 61 appearances for Downs and scored two goals, but had dropped down the pecking order, making just three starts and nine appearances overall in 2023/24.

The former Santos FC defender won six trophies with Sundowns, including three league titles and the African Football League.

But this publication can confirm that Onyango has left Downs, as first reported by SABC Sport. With his contract set to expire at the end of June, Masandawana opted against exercising the option they had in his contract.

Head coach Rulani Mokwena also confirmed Onyango’s exit from Sundowns when asked about it by Mmasekepe Matsebane on PowerFM.

Onyango joins Bongani Zungu, who also left the club after two seasons at Chloorkop. Both exits, however, are yet to be announced by the club.
