Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler broke his silence on the surprise exit of Thato Mokeke from the club after five years.
A few days ago Mokeke’s exit from City was announced after he spent five years with the side. The 33-year-old’s exit came as a shock as he had six months left on his contract, he was released so he could start talking to other clubs without restriction.
The former Chippa United utility man graced City with a Telkom Knockout Cup in 2016/17 season and made over 270 appearances for City including 260 minutes of CAF Champions League.
Tinkler confirmed that the exit of Mokeke was more of him not being in the plans of the club for the upcoming season. He also confirmed that since he is injured, he will continue rehab with the club.
“Thato [Mokeke] was called in because we know his injury is a long term injury, but [we’re] looking now forward to the next season,” Tinkler told the media.
“Is Thato Mokeke in our plans, he wasn’t really gonna be in our plans so we gave him the option of staying till the end of the season or he could move now get fully paid, which is the chairman has paid him out in full of his contract and he can already start looking at other clubs.
“So, he chooses that option he wanted to stay with us until this period just to do a little bit of his rehab here.”
Mokeke has since been spotted at City’s crosstown rivals Cape Town Spurs.
