Baxter – Why Petersen Played Ahead Of Khune & Bvuma

Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has explained why he picked Brandon Petersen ahead of Bruce Bvuma and Itumeleng Khune after many fans called for the latter’s inclusion following his performances at the DStv Compact Cup.

Khune was voted into the Compact Cup XI of Warriors and ended up winning the tournament, receiving praise from Dylan Kerr and many others.

However, the veteran Chiefs keeper found himself out of the squad for Amakhosi’s 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy on Saturday.

Baxter gave some insight into his goalkeeper selection, saying Petersen trained very well and his attributes favoured tonight’s game.

“You’re right Itu played in the Compact Cup and we were pleased to see him at his level,” he said when asked by iDiski Times.

“Daniel was away at AFCON after not playing in AFCON, missing a lot of our training.

“So it was going to be between the other three goalkeepers this evening. Brandon was outstanding in the camp in Cape Town. Reports from the staff there flagged up that he was really good.

“When I then watched the training and Bruce, Itu and Brandon, Brandon was performing very well. It was a close one, a close call for tonight.

“Brandon was the one we chose, his attributes suited this game quite well and I thought he had a good game, a very good game.”
