McCarthy Names His Three UCL Favourites

Former Manchester United strikers coach Benni McCarthy has named Inter Milan among his three UEFA Champions League favourites this season.

Inter started the tournament with an impressive 0-0 draw at Manchester City, before hammering Crvena zvezda 4-0.

McCarthy believes the 2023 finalists have shown great quality, but just questioned their squad depth to go all the way.

“Inter Milan have shown great promise,” he said on SuperSport.

“I think the way they played against Manchester City, not many teams come to the Etihad [and play like that]. Not even Real Madrid could do to them what Inter has done.

“Inter showed that they have a team that can [win the UCL], but do they have the metal to go all the way, I don’t know.”

Meanwhile, record champions Madrid, as well as Man City are McCarthy’s other frontrunners for the 2024/25 title.

“But Real Madrid is Real Madrid,” he continued.

“They play the most average football but they’ve got the players to do it every game and they’ve got the mentality, they’ve got the mindset, Champions League is built for them.

“They will definitely be there, they will be the favourites now that they’ve added [Kylian] Mbappe. Once the combinations between all that players come together, and I think Mbappe… So Madrid, Inter and Man City, those are definitely the favourites.”
