Ben Youssef Proud Of Mentality As Chiefs Make It Five On The Trot

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has praised the mentality and squad depth of his side after a commanding 4-1 victory over Magesi at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening extended their winning run in the Betway Premiership to five consecutive matches.

Goals from Flávio Silva, Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala and Khanyisa Mayo – the last two coming after the break – gave Amakhosi a dominant win away from home, with Diteboho Mofokeng’s 69th-minute strike the only blemish on an otherwise controlled Chiefs performance.

For Ben Youssef, the manner of the win meant more than the scoreline itself; “I think the most important thing, the performance comes before [the result], the performance was there,” he said when asked by iDiski Times about their latest win.

“We discussed a lot about the mentality needed for this game, because it would be a difficult game. I’m proud of the mentality and spirit we showed on the pitch.”

A particular highlight was the contribution of players returning from injury, with Reeve Frosler delivering two assists and Mayo netting his second league goal of the season after a spell on the sidelines.

“Also very proud of the players coming from injuries, coming from the bench, they gave us support and what we asked from them,” Ben Youssef said.

“Reeve was back, gave us two assists and Mayo scored his second goal in the league and he’s back. It’s very good for the confidence of the striker.”

The win further underlines the strength-in-depth argument the Chiefs technical team has been making all season, with Ben Youssef insisting that Amakhosi are not reliant on any individual.

“As I said from the beginning, we have a big squad, we’re not a team that depend on one or two players — we have a big squad and any player who is ready, he will fight and help the team.”

Chiefs now sit on 45 points from 23 league games, firmly in the hunt for a top-three finish as the Betway Premiership season enters its final stretch.
