Sundowns Confirm Mid-Season Plans

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena says the squad will receive a three-week break before returning to Chloorkop to prepare for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

After a record-breaking year in 2021 for team achievements and several individual records smashed – Mokwena admits the mental and physical fatigue was evident within the squad.

After their 1-0 defeat to AmaZulu and 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants, the league winning tactician stated that they had plans of having a camp abroad – which was reported to have been in Europe.

However, the strict Covid-19 regulations have forced the club to remain in the country.

“We have a plan in place, we have a mid-season break, we’ll take three weeks off and then resume training on the 14th [of January] and start with medicals,” Mokwena said.

“As soon as we’re back we’ll spend a couple of days at Chloorkop and then resort to a camp. We’re still ironing out finer details but initially, the plan was to go out of the country.

“But we Covid and all these travel restrictions it makes it very difficult so we’ll be in bound and we’ll stay within the borders. But we still need to try and make the camp competitive and beneficial to the group.”

Mokwena added that the plan restore the first team back to full fitness with mental and physical fatigue taking its toll after 60 games in 2021.

“The last three games of the season shows you that we have a battle on our hands, not only on the pitch – you see the officiating. Some of the decisions leave a lot to be desired, but I don’t want to talk too much,” he said.

“I don’t want to be called into a DC but the focus is what we see on the pitch and trying to improve the performances – that’s where we are, it’s going to be a difficult year if the last three games are anything to go by.”
