Ghana and Carlos Queiroz have parted ways for a second time in the space of just a few weeks, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirming the Portuguese coach’s departure from the Black Stars.

The GFA and Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate his contract following a disastrous start to Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The 73-year-old had only returned to the Black Stars in September after his initial mandate, which included leading Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, came to an end.

Queiroz was reappointed on September 2 after discussions between the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, with the association backing his experience and knowledge of the national team.

However, his second spell lasted just one international window.

Ghana opened their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast before suffering an even more damaging 4-2 loss to The Gambia after surrendering a two-goal lead.

The latter defeat came just one day before the decision to end Queiroz’s latest spell.

Despite initially insisting that his resignation would not solve Ghana’s wider football problems after the loss to The Gambia, Queiroz and the GFA have now agreed to bring the relationship to an end.

In a statement published by the GFA on Thursday, Queiroz confirmed that both parties reached the decision following discussions held in a “spirit of mutual respect”.

“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars, and Ghanaian football above everything else,” he said.

Queiroz also pointed to the conditions surrounding the national team and Ghana’s recent performances.

“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” he added.

The experienced coach thanked the GFA, its president, his technical staff and the players, while urging supporters to continue backing the Black Stars.

“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” Queiroz said.

“The talent and potential are there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana.”

Ghana are now faced with another change in the dugout as they attempt to revive their AFCON 2027 qualification campaign after two defeats from their opening two Group C fixtures.

For Queiroz, meanwhile, it marks another abrupt ending to his latest international coaching assignment.
