Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise has opened up about his decision to remain at the club despite finding it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter.

The 30-year-old, who was born in KwaZulu-Natal, came through Sundowns’ youth ranks before being promoted to the senior team during Pitso Mosimane’s tenure.

Mkhulise was regarded as one of the club’s brightest prospects and was tipped to become a key figure in the midfield. While he has produced impressive performances over the years, he has struggled to secure a consistent place in the starting line-up.

Despite links with a possible departure, Mkhulise signed a new contract with the Brazilians in January, extending his stay at the club.

The midfielder says he remains happy at Sundowns, particularly with the way the club has supported and looked after him. He believes the leadership and stability within the club have played a major role in keeping him in Tshwane for so long.

“It’s because I’m happy here, they take good care of me. And I’m in a happy place,” said Mkhulise.

“It’s like I’m home here, so for me to sign a new contract, it was like a no-brainer. So I didn’t even think twice, I’m happy here. And what’s kept me going for so long I think it all starts from the leadership, they inspire us.

“We have the greatest leadership in the country. So they keep us motivated to do well each and every day. To wake up in the morning and come here.

“And to work hard and to do well because we don’t want to disappoint them. So that’s what’s kept me going for so long.”

When asked which leadership he meant, he stated, “From the president [Dr Patrice Motsepe] to the chairman [Tlhopie Motsepe], the board, the coaches, our captains, everyone in the team.”
