Bafana Bafana talent Olwethu Makhanya has reflected on a special month of his career as the 22-year-old Rangers defender was named Scottish Premiership Player of the Month for September, capping a run of form that has made him one of the standout performers at Ibrox.

Speaking to Sky Sports after receiving the award, Makhanya was quick to credit the collective effort behind his personal recognition.

“September was a special month for us, especially before the international break. We had a good run of form, kept some clean sheets, got some points. It was good,” he said.

From a difficult start to a team that clicks

The season did not begin smoothly for Rangers, with several new faces arriving at the club and the squad needing time to come together. Makhanya says that process has now paid off.

“It was a difficult start, but we had new faces in the club, so we had to try to gel everyone together. We got to know each other a bit more,” he explained.

“I think we grew together and understood each other more with time. We fought for each other, we believe in each other, we’re a family. It’s important to be consistent and now try to improve every game.”

Back-to-back Old Firm wins

A major part of Rangers’ September was beating rivals Celtic twice in the Old Firm derby. For Makhanya, those results were proof of what the group is capable of.

“Winning against Celtic twice shows the quality we have as a team. It shows we can beat anyone, so that was just another game, and it helps with momentum as a team.”

A big month for Bafana Bafana too

Makhanya’s form carried over to the international stage. He featured in all three of South Africa’s wins during the international break: 2-1 against Guinea, 5-0 against Eritrea and 1-0 against Egypt.

Despite the praise, the defender is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. With the campaign still in its early stages, he says the focus is on staying consistent.

“Everyone in the team knows the season is a long run, so we just have to pick up things as we did before the international break,” he concluded.

If Makhanya and Rangers can maintain that momentum, September may prove to be just the start.
