Mvala Hailed For Transition At Downs

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has heaped praise on Mothibi Mvala for his transition from midfield to centre-back this season.

The much-maligned Mvala has often been subject of banter from supporters due to him being a robust powerful player, not synonymous with the brand of shoe, shine and piano associated with the Brazilians.

He’s not been short of criticism but he’s become a reliable figure for Masandawana, especially since Mokwena took over as sole head coach, starting nine of their last 10 games in defence, instead of his usual midfield roles, in their incredible 11-match winning streak.

“How good has he [Mvala] been… that’s not for me to say but you guys [media] to write,” Mokwena said.

“Because when he’s not so good, you write too. So when he is very good, let’s write too and how good has he been… He’s been colossal, so let’s write a column, maybe one nyana in one of the papers.

“Just one dedicated to Mothobi Mvala and the transition that he’s made from central midfield, anti-10 even, it’s true… a mainstay at Mamelodi Sundowns at center-back with the quality of competition.

“I mean for him to keep Grant Kekana out the team tells you something, because Grant has been magnificent.”
