SAFA Assistant Ref Passes Away In Car Accident

South African Football Association assistant referee Moeketsi Molelekoa has sadly passed away.

The Free State-born official died in a motor vehicle accident late on Friday, according to SAFA Head of Referees Abdul Ebrahim.

“He passed away in the motor vehicle accident yesterday (Friday) evening,” said Ebrahim to iDiski Times.

“This is very sad and a sad loss.”

The PSL has confirmed the sad news on Saturday morning and also stated their will be a moment of silence for the late referee ahead of this weekend’s games.

“The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is saddened by the passing of PSL match official, Moeketsi Molelekoa,” a statement read.

“The League sends heartfelt condolences to the Molelekoa family, SAFA, and the football fraternity at large. The PSL will observe a moment of silence in his honour ahead of this weekend’s DStv Premiership, DStv Diski Challenge, and Motsepe Foundation Championship fixtures. May his soul repose peacefully.”     

Molekekoa was recently the second assistant when Orlando Pirates charged to a late 3-1 win over Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium last weekend.

Other notable games this season were when he was also second assistant in the Soweto Derby in October last year when Kaizer Chiefs defeated Pirates 1-0 at FNB Stadium.

He was also part of the COSAFA Cup in Durban in June and July last year.

The Botshabelo-born official started to raise the flag in the professional set up in 2015 with games in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, before moving up the ladder in the DStv Premiership.

He has also done duty internationally in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
