Royal AM president Shauwn ‘Ma’ Mkhize has announced that she would like to rope in former Banyana Banyana star striker Portia Modise to be part of her women’s team’s coaching staff.
Mkhize confirmed her intentions after Modise, who scored 101 goals in 124 appearances, spoke about her life struggles as a lesbian women, which even led her to having to sell her car when she won it as the Sport Star of the Year a few years ago.
She said the R1 million that came with BMW as prize money, she traded in the car because she wanted to build her mom a house in Soweto and there was no way she was going to maintain the car because the tires were expensive.
After Modise spoke about her life, Mkhize followed in the queue to be a speaker at the Sport Summit at ICC in Durban.
“I have been looking for you Portia to be part of the [Royal AM] ladies. We will talk after here, but I want you to be in my team,” said Mkhize on stage, which made the entire room clap.
Royal AM became the second DStv Premiership side to also have a women’s team after MaMkhize bought the status of Bloemfontein Celtic at the start of this season.
The businesswoman said her life has been about controversy ever since she has been involved in football – mentioning how she blocked the PSL playoffs in the 2020/21 season after Royal AM had finished on top.
However, they were overtaken on the log when Sekhukhune were awarded three points in arbitration from a match they lost against Polokwane City‚ who had not fielded the five required U23 players.
As a consequence, Sekhukhune were promoted as champions, while Royal AM were bumped down to the playoffs, which they boycotted before MaMkhize bought the status of Bloemfontein Celtic’s male team.
On Friday, Mkhize also confirmed that she wants to build a school so that kids can be able to conduct interviews.
“I won’t die before that happens,” she explained.
MaMkhize is already building houses around Durban, handing over others in Clermont, KwaMashu and uMlazi last year.
She concluded by saying her women’s team will be strong next year because she is “sick and tired to see Mamelodi Sundowns dominating and winning the women’s league all the time”.
