Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has started his reign at Young Africans SC with a win in the Tanzanian Community Shield over Steve Barker’s Simba SC.
The Tanzania Premier League curtain raiser saw the league champions (Young Africans) and CRDB Federation Cup winners (Simba) face off.
It was the first Kariakoo Derby between Mngqithi and Barker, with Yanga beating Simba 1-0 in a tightly-contested match.
The result saw Mngqithi get off to a perfect start in Tanzania and take home the first trophy of the season.
Yanga also equaled Simba as record champions in the competition after lifting the Community Shield for a 10th time.
It was their third successive win, as Simba last won the competition in 2023.
The result is a blow to Barker and Simba, who were unbeaten over 30 games in domestic competitions since the former Stellenbosch FC coach had taken over.
