Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies opened their 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifiers with a 8-0 win over a 10-women Olympic de Moroni at the Sugar Ray Xulu stadium on Thursday.
It took 10 minutes for the Chloorkop-based side to open the scoring, as midfielder Chuene Morifi, was the star of the show, scored the opener.
Morifi also assisted Tiisetso Makhubela in the 36th minute and Boitumelo Rabale in the 50th minute.
Refilwe Tholakele could have also been on the score sheet, if her 28th minute header wasn’t cleared while Lelona Daweti was denied by the cross bar in the 32nd minute. The match went into the break with Sundowns leading 2-0.
Rabale had a penalty kick saved just a minute before her goal came and things got tougher for the visiting side when Anllaoia Ali was sent off for a bad tackle on Karabo Makhuribetshi in the 55th minute.
With the numerical advantage Amanda Mthandi and Tholakele scored two more goals for Sundowns after incident, while Gabonnelwe Kekana netted the seventh.
Goal number eight was scored by Miche Minnies in the 93rd minute to complete the thrashing.
The result means Jerry Tshabalala’s charges are in pole position in Group B with three points, followed my Mozambique’s Costa do Sol who defeated Eswatini’s Young Buffaloes 2-1 in the Group’s earlier kick-off.
Buffaloes are third with no point followed by de Moroni at the bottom also with no point.
