Mokwena Explains Fathi Incident

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena suggested the incident with Mostafa Fathi was due to a foul that saw the players lose composure in the heated clash on Sunday.

Sundowns and Pyramids played out to a 0-0 draw in a fixture that threatened to get out of control on a few occasions in the second half with officials losing control of the game.

However, there were moments of some stinging challenges, which saw emotions erupt and Fathi and Mokwena had a go at each other on the sidelines.

“It’s difficult to [comment on that] because it brings me back to the refereeing issue, and I don’t want to discuss that situation,” Mokwena said.

“It was a bit of an unfortunate situation, and again it happens because of a foul that’s not given and then the players feel incensed, and when you try and calm everyone down, then players react – but not [going] to pay too much attention to that.”

The Masandawana boss went on to confirm their Moroccan defender Abdelmounaim Boutouil was brought off due to an injury – which will be assessed this week.

“And Abdel yes, [it’s an injury that saw him brought off early].”

Sundowns now host Cape Town City on Wednesday in the DStv Premiership before travelling to Cairo to face Pyramids in their next CAF Champions League outing.
