After Hugo Broos announced his final 23-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, here are the 27 players who were cut from his list.
The Belgian tactician has long long had his list of favourites, with little to no surprises in his recent squad selections.
The 50-man preliminary list left some room for change, although it was a surprise that Tashereeq Matthews, who was arguably SA’s most in-form player in Europe after scoring 10 and setting up 10 goals in Sweden, as well as Fagrie Lakay didn’t make the initial list.
On Thursday, Broos had to cut over half of the names for his final 23-man squad, with six players from Orlando Pirates being cut, and three for Kaizer Chiefs.
He did explain that Foster was left out due to “medical reasons” despite returning to the field for Burnley, while Lebo Mothiba is also ruled out with injury.
