Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena praised the effort of his team after they beat FC Nouadhibou 2-0 to book their place in the CAF Champions League knockout rounds.
Grant Kekana and Thembinkosi Lorch scored the goals in Mauritania, that confirmed Sundowns progress through the group stages with one match to spare.
After the game, Mokwena praised his team for their performance, stating it was a difficult game against Nouadhibou, who have not lost at home in any game for some time.
“First let me greet everybody and congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns on the victory against a very good, Nouadhibou side, that’s well coached and has some very good players,” Mokwena said at the post match press conference.
“I think an incredible effort from our team and from our players and a good performance I thought all around, first half a lot of control, a lot of chances.
“Second half also a lot of control, a lot of chances, the subs were very, very good. And they brought good energy to the pitch.
“And, ja, and thank you Nouadhibou for a very good game. They were good opponents, very competitive. And the people of Nouadhibou who have received us very well and we would like to thank them for the hospitality and the treatment that we’ve received while we’ve been in Mauritania.
“So commiserations on the result, but worthy opponents and a difficult team. I said even before the match that this is as a team that hasn’t lost in the group stages at home, it’s a team that hasn’t lost in the league in 12 games at home, and so it’s not easy to come here and get this result, so big compliments to the squad and the entire football club.”c
