Johnson Makes CAFCL Claim, Explains 2AM Training

Kaizer Chiefs caretaker coach Cavin Johnson has insisted his side have not given up on chasing the CAF Champions League spot and explained he made his side train at 2AM on Sunday for recovery reasons.

Amakhosi will return to action on Tuesday evening, when they will face in-form Stellenbosch FC, who gone 18 games unbeaten.

With Stellies currently holding the CAFCL spot on the DStv Premiership log, Chiefs could again land a massive win in the race for the CAF football.

“It is our intention to fight for every point still available in the remainder of the season,” he told the club’s media team when asked about the CAFCL spot.

“We still believe we can make it. If you don’t believe, you may as well pack it in. As Kaizer Chiefs, we’ll never do that.”

With Chiefs playing two games in the space of three days, Johnson took a special measure and had a recovery session at 2AM on Sunday morning.

“The dynamics have been different. We haven’t had this many back-to-back games since I have been with the team,” he added.

“We returned from Cape Town on Saturday night and had a regeneration session at 02:00 in the morning so as to allow the players to rest all of Sunday, which is the best recovery.

“Today (Monday) we train, and we’ll be ready for tomorrow.”

Chiefs, who currently sit in seventh place on 30 points – five behind second-placed Stellenbosch, face the Cape Winelands side at 19:30 on Tuesday.
