Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says he’s not concerned about Nigeria’s results, as he looks to lead the nation to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
South Africa moved into second place behind Rwanda on seven points, only separated by goal difference after four games into the Group C qualifiers.
Broos stated the camp assumed they were targeting four points from the two games, and secured just that with the 1-1 draw with the Super Eagles and 3-1 win over the Warriors.
And the West African giants, who beat Bafana in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, went on to lose 2-1 to Benin, leaving them winless after four games, while Lesotho lost 1-0 to Rwanda at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
“I don’t look at the results of our opponents, I just look to our results, and if our results are good, whatever the opponents do, pfft, it’s not important,” Broos said about Nigeria and Lesotho losing after beating Zimbabwe 3-1.
“It was important to win [Zimabwe], not because Nigeria lost, no because it’s a win for us, that’s the focus we need to have, not looking at other results.
“You will never qualify because of other results, you will qualify because of your own results and we’re on schedule.
“So let’s go on, next year when the qualifiers start again but I think if we can keep this level, we have a big chance to qualify [for the World Cup].”
South Africa face up against Lesotho (home) and Benin (away) in March 2025 for the next qualifiers.
