SA To Have Two Women’s Sides In CAFCL?

South Africa has a chance to have two women’s sides at this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League finals.

COSAFA released a statement on Monday, clarifying that reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will not be part of the qualifiers, as they have secured passage to the finals by virtue of their champion status.

This means that the side that finished second in the Hollywoodbets Super League last season, University of Western Cape (UWC), will be the sole SA representative at this year’s COSAFA qualifiers in Malawi next month.

UWC is among the five new sides in the competition this year alongside – Ascent Soccer Academy of Malawi, Herentals Queens from Zimbabwe, Gaborone United of Botswana and Uniao Desportiva de Lichinga of Mozambique.

The five sides will join former champions Green Buffaloes of Zambia and seasoned campaigners Eswatini’s Young Buffaloes and Namibia’s Ongos FC, previously known as TURA Magic.

The teams will be drawn in two groups of four with the top two sides advancing to the semi-finals. The winner of the final takes all including a ticket to the continental finals with Sundowns.

The draw takes place on Wednesday.
