McCarthy – The Truth About Benni Connection

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy has shed light on the connection with Bafana Bafana legend Benni and their last name, McCarthy, which is of Irish origin.

Fabian is from Vryburg in the North West while Benni is from Cape Town. Throughout their careers they have been confused as blood brothers because of their last name.

The former Kaizer Chiefs man explained to iDiski Times editor Rob Delport in edition 183 of the newspaper that there is a generational genetic connection between his and the former Manchester United first team coach’s grandparents adding that the family elders have stayed in touch.

“I’m still trying to find the Irish roots, because if I can, then I can apply for one of those passports, and then it will be easy for the kids (laughs),” McCarthy told iDiski Times.

“Strangely enough, I was told that the grandparents were related. And Benni’s father wasn’t originally from Cape Town. He was originally from the Free State, so he moved to Cape Town, and we are originally from the North West, so North West and Free State, those elders are still family and are related.

“So that’s how we came about it as players. The one uncle of my father then told me to say, ‘Hey, come here. Let me explain to you the generations and the history’.

“But people will always think and ask, ‘Hey, Fabian, but why are you not from Cape Town or, or they think I’m also from Cape Town.”
