Mendieta Opens Account In Saudi

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch playmaker Junior Mendieta scored his first goal in Saudi Arabia for Al-Faisaly.

Mendieta joined the Saudi Yelo League side in the January window as a free agent after parting ways with Greek Super League side FC Volos.

Lured to the Gulf by former AmaZulu head coach Pablo Franco Martin, who has been a keen admirer of his talents, they face an uphill task to survive this season.

The Argentine scored his first goal for the club in his second start in the 1-1 draw against Al-Jubail, which leaves them 16th in the 18-team division and in the automatic relegation spots.

With 13 games to go, they are one point from safety, but with a run of form of one win, three draws and three defeats since Franco’s arrival, they have yet to end the slump of the Al Majma’ah based outfit.

Mendieta scored four goals in 15 games in Greece after his off-season exit from Sundowns, where he was released to make way for Brazilian striker Artur Sales at Masandawana.
