Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has revealed he opted to announce his decision to leave the club in June to allow the Buccaneers enough time to plan for his successor.
On Thursday, Pirates sent shockwaves through the local football fraternity after announcing Riveiro’s decision not to extend his in June-expiring contract.
While some expected Riveiro to depart, especially after he previously stated he feel an ideal duration at a club is three years, the timing of the announcement has surprised many.
The Spaniard admitted he would’ve liked the announcement to come later, but need to plan for the future.
“Obviously, in an ideal world, one would have wanted to hold on making any statements until the end of the season but it’s not possible,” he told the club’s media team.
“The club needs to plan for its future and it’s only fair that they are given time to do so.”

The 47-year-old joined the Buccaneers in July 2022 and has been in charge of 121 games, collecting 77 wins so far.
He’s also lifted three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cup trophies, and could still add more silverware this campaign, with his side in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals and still chasing Mamelodi Sundowns for the Betway Premiership title.
