Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso says there’s still trust in midfielder Matías Esquivel but he’s in an uncomfortable situation at present.
The Argentine joined Sundowns from Argentina top-flight side Club Atletico Lanus in a reported €2.3 million (R47m) transfer with high expectations but thus far, has not established himself in the team.
He spent time on loan back in his homeland with CA Talleres but has returned and question marks has been raised whether he will form part of the squad that also has question marks over the futures of Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Peter Shalulile and Khuliso Mudau going into the new season this weekend against Chippa United.
“Esquivel is a player who hasn’t had opportunities and a story that comes already from the time of the previous coach, so there’s a story that speaks for Matias that goes before me,” Cardoso said when asked by iDiski Times for an update on the Argentine.
“Let’s see how the market ends, obviously Matias is put in this uncomfortable position also, because he’s been a long time a player of Sundowns and hasn’t had the opportunity. Or let’s say the capacity and opportunity of showing the level expected.
“So, let’s see where the situation ends. We trust him, we believe he can still be an important player – so let’s hope… he’s working with us normal. Let’s hope to see where we can finish with him.”
Esquivel has featured 16 times for Masandawana, with two goals and one assist in all competitions since his arrival at the club.
