In a recent revelation, Kaizer Chiefs striker Wandile Duba has opened up on being the target of death threats on social media.
The speedy forward was speaking during the Nedbank multipurpose court handover at Phulong Secondary School in Kwa-Thema, Springs, on Wednesday.
Duba has been one of the most promising young players for Amakhosi, having come through the club’s youth ranks. He’s shown potential of becoming a key player for Nasreddine Nabi’s side.
The 21-year-old was asked about criticism he’s received, particularly on social media for his aggressive play against the opponents.
He explained that he isn’t bothered by the criticism because he is simply playing the way coach Nabi instructed but he went on to reveal the extent of the negativity he faces online, including receiving death threats.
“It doesn’t [affect me], it’s the way the coach wants us to play,” said Duba.
“It’s just the comments, people coming into your account, threatening to kill you and all that. So, even in the last game, I wasn’t in the right state of mind. I didn’t even go to play.”
He explained that he handles the challenge with the help of his brother, who acts as a support system and calms him down, preventing him from engaging with the public comments.
“I don’t think that thing frustrates me as much but I usually speak to my brother [as a support system],” he added.
“He always calms me down because, at times, I feel like talking back or sending a text back after getting a negative comment or someone sending me texts, talking whatever they say about me.”
