Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mayo believes his Khanyisa Mayo returning to SA is another platform for him to do more than just play club football but also a chance for a return to the Bafana Bafana squad.
Mayo signed with Chiefs last month on loan from CR Belouizdad after spending a season in Algeria. He has seven senior national team caps and the last time he was with Bafana was in March 2024 during the international friendlies against Andorra and Algeria.
His father told iDiski Times senior journalist Matshelane Mamabolo in edition 224 of the newspaper that his son needs to work hard and score goals if he is to return to Hugo Broos’ side.
“Being home will help him,” Mayo senior told iDiski Times.
“He needs to work hard, score goals for the club and then the national team will come. But you cannot expect to play for Bafana if you are not doing well for your club.”
The 52-year-old Mayo further added that his son did not flop at CRB where he played 28 matches across all competitions and scored four goals but instead gained experience that will come in handy at Chiefs.
“He learnt a lot outside the country,” added Patrick.
“Football there is very physical; the culture and language are different, and he had to adapt. He started well in his first season, but coaching changes affected him.
“I won’t say he failed – he gained experience. That experience will help him here [in SA].”
