McCarthy’s Kenya Make It Back-To-Back Wins

Kenya secured a 1-0 win over Burundi with rising star Wesley Ogam finding the goal in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier on Thursday afternoon.

The Harambee Stars produced a dominant display that was helped by former Kaizer Chiefs striker Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana being sent off after just six minutes.

However, it wasn’t without a blow for McCarthy’s troops as their first choice goalkeeper, Brian Bwire, who’s enjoyed an excellent start to the new season at Polokwane City, was forced off with injury early in the opening half.

While they probed and created plenty of goalscoring opporunities, it took second half substitute, Ogam to finally open the scoring in the 72nd minute of the game.

The 20-year-old who landed a move to Austrian Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburger AC, netted his sixth goal in just his eighth senior international cap – following on a standout African Nations Championship campaign and now scoring in three consecutive World Cup qualifiers.

McCarthy has now secured six wins, three draws, with three defeats in his 12 matches in charge of the East African outfit, who are joint hosts of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
