Williams – What Helped Bafana In Resurgence

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen William says the intensity and professionalism of the squad at all times has been the cornerstone of their consistent results over the last few years.

Going into the clash against Zambia, the South Africa national team have qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, speaking major optimism over the future of the sport in the country.

The U17 and U20 national teams are also brimming with talent, having both competed at the junior FIFA World Cup at their respective age group levels.

“We obviously focus on ourselves and what we’re building, we’ve built a wonderful team over the last few years, so we’re focused on ourselves, and if you could see the intensity in training, you will see how serious the guys are taking this game [vs Zambia],” he said.

“The intensity was so high, and the coach is obviously very happy about that because we all could have camp and relaxed because it’s a friendly match, we’ve qualified for the FIFA World Cup – all those nothings but the intensity and seriousness I saw this week is amazing.

“That is what helped us over the last few years, being serious, being professional for each and every game, because that is building blocks, each and every step is important.”

Williams went on the add to the personal nature of playing this pre-AFCON preparation clash in front of his hometown supporters.

“It’s amazing to play [at home] it brings so much joy to me, I know what I mean to the community of the Northern areas, actually the whole Gqeberha, and for me it just gives me happiness to play in front of so many familiar faces, family and loved ones,” he said.

“And I know what is going on here back home – so for 90+ minutes, we will put smiles on faces as we all forget about our problems for that moment – it’s an amazing opportunity for me but for the team as well.

“We want to play here, we had a wonderful atmosphere here last year, and it’s one of the places the players dearly wanted to come to. With all the achievements we’ve had, let’s go out there, win, celebrate accordingly after.”
