Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker was left disappointed by the officiating in their 1-1 draw against Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars.
A draw away from home in the continental stage is not a bad a result but for Stellies it feels like a loss after they conceded a late penalty to deny them maximum points. The Cape Winelands side took the lead through speedy winger Langelihle Phili. Immediately after that, there was a huge penalty shout from Stellies which fell onto deaf. Barker’s side remained resilient at the back as they were closer to walking away with maximum points.

Black Stars were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute and Togolese international Marouf Tchakei converted to make it 1-1. The Tanzanian side came knocking for the second goal forcing Oscarine Masuluke to make two crucial saves in a space of three minutes.
The 1-1 draw pushed Stellenbosch to the top of Group C with four points after two games.
Barker explained how disappointed he was by the officiating claiming that there was a penalty incident, but referee didn’t give it.
“In my opinion we should have six points, unfortunately clear penalty is not given to us when were 1-0 probably will make us to go 2-0,” Barker told the media.
“So, I am very disappointed with the officiating, but it is what it is. We had good structure we defended well. We had opportunities on transition, at halftime that was the message, and I knew that one opportunity to get in behind them we will get something which we did.
“Obviously after that we had to manage the game instead of getting a penalty to make it 2-0 up, we conceded a late penalty very disappointed by the outcome of the game I believe that was an opportunity to get maximum points.”
