Former PSL Star Kanyenda Dies Aged 43

Malawi legend and former Premier Soccer League star Esau Kanyenda has passed away, aged 43, just a day after he revealed he was diagnosed with liver cancer.

The Malawi Football Association (FAM) confirmed in an official statement about his untimely passing this morning in the United Kingdom, where he resided.

The legendary striker enjoyed an explosive stint in South Africa with Jomo Cosmos that catapulted his career into the limelight across African football, before earning a multi-million rand transfer to FC Rostov.

He became the first-ever Malawian to play in the UEFA Champions League when he turned out for Lokomotiv Moscow and went on the ply his trade in the country for eight years – before a brief stint in Denmark.

The towering striker eventually returned to South Africa in 2012 with Polokwane City and then ended his professional career in his homeland with Mighty Wanderers between 2017 and 2019.

He represented the Flames 72 times, scoring 22 goals and earned him the nickname, the ‘Black Mamba’ as one of the nations most revered sporting icons as their fifth highest scoring in their history.
