Former Durban City and SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt is among the leading candidates to succeed Steve Barker at Stellenbosch.
While Hunt officially parted ways with City by mutual agreement just five months into his tenure at the beginning of December, Barker made a surprise exit from Stellies last week, leaving behind eight years of working at the club, for a move to Tanzanian giants Simba SC – that not many saw coming.

Despite their inconsistent form in the league this season, Barker’s work at the club has been herald as transformative for a young ambitious club, which was showcased by their nomination for the CAF Club of the Year award.
Given the precarious league position, just three points off the relegation zone currently occupied by Chippa United, experience in the league is considered crucial for the successor and Hunt has emerged as the primary target.
The four-time league winner is currently without a job, after parting ways with SuperSport United – who were sold in the off-season and rebranded as Siwelele.
