Broos Admits Similarities To 2018 AFCON Winning Squad

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos admits there’s similarities to his 2018 Africa Cup of Nations winning squad and the current youthful Cameroon team.

The Indomitable Lions came into the tournament with major question marks as President of the Federation Samuel Eto’o fired head coach Marc Brys, and dropped several experienced players, while David Pagou was instated as their new leader.

Andre Onana, André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, albeit the latter out with injury, are the biggest omissions from the squad that has only two members of the AFCON-winning squad from eight years ago.

“Tomorrow is a game between South Africa and Cameroon, not between Hugo Broos and Cameroon, let that be clear, there has been a lot of changes so close to the tournament, you change the team like it was changed by Cameroon,” he said about the game.

“You always think how will that end, but for you, people of Cameroon, it ends very well because you have a young team, a team that’s hungry to have good games and to wins games. You can compare it to eight years ago when we went to Gabon.

“Nobody expected anything from us and then suddenly Cameroon won AFCON, I also had a young team, that was hungry [to succeed], you see the mental side of the team is very important, and Cameroon is showing that again.

The two sides will meet in Rabat on Sunday at 21h00.
