Head of TV and Commercial at CAF, Luxolo September has reflected on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco, saying among some of its successes was the event being graced by some of the biggest stars in the world.
September spoke on Sport Night Live With Andile Ncube revealing that the tournament was the biggest watched where CAF also broke into new territories in terms of viewership.
French legend Zinedine Zidane whose son was in goals for Algeria was seen at the tournament as well as Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona’s Jules Kounde.
September said previously not a lot of people wanted to be associated with AFCON and now feel safe for their brands to be associated.
“Another thing you must look at, a number of these global stars who’ve got African roots or associations, who have all of a sudden, now seen that it’s safer to associate their brands with AFCON,” said September.
“Mbappe came, Zidane came, Kounde came and a lot of these guys who are from the NBA were there and Idris Elba came. And a lot of these guys who’ve got African roots, they somehow, you know, before no one wanted to associate themselves with this.
“So, for the first time, the AFCON was watched in Japan, for the first time, it was watched in China. For the first time, we did a deal in South Korea, and these are not just gift deals. These are commercial deals.”
