Lakay’s Fine Form Continues As Title Hopes Increase

South African forward Fagrie Lakay is leading the charge of a surprise title challenge for Cleopatra FC in the Egyptian Premier League.

Lakay, 28, joined the club, initially on loan from Pyramids, with Nigerian winger Sodiq Awujoola heading in the opposite direction for the 2024/25 season.

However, Awujoola has since returned to now play alongside Lakay, who completed a permanent move to the club where he’s now scored nine goals with 10 assists in 47 games, primarily playing in a role on either wing or behind the striker.

For a club that was founded in 2007, Cleopatra have always shown ambition in the market in their rise to the top-flight, but there’s been shrewd dealings of late, the likes of Karim Nedved, Omar Kamal and Amr El Solia from Al Ahly while winger Islam Issa joined from Pyramids.

A team packed with talent and experience now with eight wins from their last 10 league games, with the latest being a 3-2 victory of Ghazl Al Mahalla, where Lakay netted a brace and walked away with the Man of the Match award.

The side lead by head coach Ali Maher are now seven points clear of second placed Pyramids, albiet having played two games more than the White Knights.
