Xoki – It’s Always Been A Goal

Orlando Pirates vice-captain Tapelo Xoki has addressed why the club and squad has been so vocal about their league title ambitions this season.

In years gone by, Pirates have been reserved and never clearly outlined their intentions to say they want the league, leaning more towards the narrative of a long-term project and process towards success as they picked up several domestic cups.

With the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup in the bag, and leading the league by two points, albeit having played one game more than Sundowns – who are chasing a ninth consecutive crown, it appears a race that will go down to the wire.

“It’s always been a goal [to win the league], everyone who comes to the club, knows the club plays to win every tournament that we participate in, but the league is a marathon and we’ve gained experience in terms of understanding the dynamics of how to get over the line,” Xoki said at the MTN Goals For Charity initiative at the Zodwa Khoza Foundation this week.

“It’s been a build-up over the years, and we are in a good position now, having learnt in the past seasons where we fell short and hopefully, we finish strong and get the one we always wanted. It’s the only trophy eluding us so far as a group so it’s the one we’re going for.”

Pirates will return to action next month after the international break with a heavy schedule facing Golden Arrows, Richards Bay, and AmaZulu before ending the month with the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
