Chicago Fire midfielder Djé D’Avilla has hailed Mbekezeli Mbokazi as a ‘special’ player and is hopeful his impressive form with Bafana Bafana continues with the Major League Soccer outfit.
The Ivory Coast midfielder joined Fire from Portuguese outfit Leiria in a reported €4-million deal last season and has emerged as a leading performer in the league – with Mbokazi and Puso Dithejane now following suit as promising African talents arriving.
The 20-year-old centre-back has become a social media sensation in America due to huge popularity in South Africa, seeing the American club’s engagements and followership surge but his performances on the field has not disappointed either.
He netted a thunderous goal against Panama on Tuesday to open his international account which gained worldwide attention and D’Avilla admits it left him pleased.
“I think Mbokazi is a special guy, special, special. When I saw the goal, I was like [going] crazy, what a goal,” he said.
“I hope he can bring this energy here, start to do his thing in Chicago to help the team, then he will be fine.”
They are currently preparing to return to MLS action against Nashville this weekend, which takes place at 02:00 on Sunday (SAST).
