Ellis On Mbane Reaching 100 Banyana Caps

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has shared her views on defender Bambanani Mbane reaching the milestone of 100 international caps.

The centre-back brought up her century of appearances during South Africa’s 1-0 victory over Algeria in an international friendly match at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban on Tuesday.

Mbane’s international journey spans nearly a decade, having made her debut in 2016 as a substitute in a CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Botswana at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa, where South Africa secured a 3-0 win.

She becomes the 12th player to achieve 100 caps for Banyana Banyana, with Janine van Wyk still holding the record at 185 appearances.

Ellis noted that Mbane may have reached the milestone earlier if not for injuries, and praised the Mamelodi Sundowns defender for her consistency, leadership, and role as a mentor to younger players.

“I think Bamba could have probably reached 100 sooner. She had a couple of injuries, but she’s come back stronger,” said Ellis.

“A true professional, someone you can rely on. She never let you down, she’s a mentor to the younger players as well because they know they’re not going to play forever.

“She’s so well deserved. The top player in Banyana and I think the others that have come before deserved it as well. She joins the Centurions and I’m very, very happy for her.

“Long may it continue because she’s shown once again that she’s a top, top player.”
