Sekhukhune United interim coach Paulos Masehe has explained his reason behind substituting goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner after two costly mistakes.
Masehe, who took charge of Sekhukhune in the absence of Eric Tinkler, who reportedly is leaving the club following a poor run of results, spoke about the game.
‘The Horse,’ as Masehe was known in his playing days, got a baptism of fire in their 3-1 loss against Stellenbosch FC on a wet evening in Cape Town.
The former Free State Stars midfielder felt that they could have done better, as two goals resulted from two mistakes made by the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, which led to his substitution in the second half and replacement by Zambian goalkeeper Toaster Nsabatha.
Masehe explained that the substitution was about protecting Leaner, not demoralizing him, because Leaner’s confidence had dropped further after the third goal, and he could see that they might concede more goals.
“To be honest it was more of protecting him,” Masehe told the media.
“From maybe even conceding more goals because it could’ve been worse had we left him and then he conceded five goals and knowing well that he could’ve done better.
“Sometimes, you just have to take those kind of decisions just to protect the players.”
